Back in the 90’s, burglars had an easy time of it, entering houses by simply lifting sliding doors from their runners and helping themselves. Manufacturers had to up their game and now thankfully security has become a priority for the design of modern bifold and sliding doors.

Here are 5 security features you should consider when buying a bifolding or sliding door, so as not to put your home at risk.

If you have any security questions or need a quote for a bifolding or sliding door, please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisors or please complete the form here.

1. Multi point locks

A multi-point locking system bolts the lead door into the frame and locks at multiple points at the turn of a key, giving a high level of security. This is an absolute MUST for any main door into your house. Single point locks leave the top and bottom of the door vulnerable, a good shove and a single point lock can fail.

2. Concealed in track lock points

Bolts that shoot down in the bottom track and up into the header track will stop the doors from being prized from the frame. Some manufacturers fit these locks to the face of the door, with one at the top and one at the bottom, while other more aesthetically pleasing locks are concealed inside and operated by an elegant single handle in the middle of the door.

3. Anti pick cylinders

The actual cylinder in a lock (the part you insert your key into), can be a weak point. Cheaper cylinders can be drilled out or easily picked. Advances in lock technology mean that anti-pick and anti-drill cylinders are readily available. Many suppliers of doors will offer these as a free upgrade if asked to do so.

4. Toughened glass

The weakest material on the exterior of any building is the glass. It’s now a legal requirement that toughened safety glass must be fitted to all doors. This legal requirement for toughened safety glass also extends to other “critical locations”. Toughened glass is up to 5 times stronger than standard glass.

5. Internal beading

Beads are the long strips of aluminium, timber or UPVC that clamp the glass into place. There was a time when beads were used externally, but intruders soon realised that by popping off the external beads they could easily remove the glass and gain entry. Internal beading eliminates that possibility, as to remove the glass unit the beads must be removed from inside the property.

Thinking about the all-important style, configuration and colour of your new bifold door is of course important. By also making sure you consider the 5 points above, you can rest easy that as well as looking good, your new bifold will keep your family and your home safe.

6 things you NEED to know when considering the cost of your bifold door.

WHY do some bifold doors cost so much more than others? It’s a good question, two doors the same size and spec, from different suppliers can be £1000’s of pounds apart!

The truth is, it’s a bit like buying a car, you could buy a Ford Fiesta or an X type Jaguar, they both get you from A to B, but they perform quite differently. Bifold doors are exactly the same and the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Still confused? Here’s 6 things you need to know to help you consider how important the cost of your bifold door is to you:

1. Manufacturing method

There are brands such as Smarts or Cortizo who manufacture the components and sell them in kit form to independent manufacturers. This method produces an affordable door but the downside is that there is no way of ensuring consist quality. The doors carry the brands name but the quality will vary between manufacturers.
There are brands such as Smarts or Cortizo who manufacture the components and sell them in kit form to independent manufacturers. This method produces an affordable door but the downside is that there is no way of ensuring consist quality. The doors carry the brands name but the quality will vary between manufacturers.
Alternatively, bifold doors produced in house (such as the Origin and Sunflex doors), are likely to be finished to a higher standard. These manufacturers have total control from start to finish. Whilst you pay more, there is no doubt you will have a better quality product.turers.

2. Research and Development

It’s worth considering how much importance the brands put into the design and development of their doors. By continually challenging themselves to improve, spend time and money on finding the best solutions to the smallest of problems, it’s likely to result in a better product. They may ask; ‘How can we make the door run more smoothly? How can we increase security and thermal properties? If we’re going to guarantee this door for 20 years what’s the best material to use?’ The upside? whilst you pay more to have the answers to these questions, you will benefit from a superior bifold door.

3. Components

As you’d expect when buying a car, the quality of the components will affect the price. A rolls Royce may have leather seats and a hand-finished dash compared to fabric seats and a moulded plastic dash in a cheaper Astra.
A bifold is the same, the quality of hinges, rollers, bearings and even the grade of aluminium used to make the panels vary greatly. As with a car, you get what you pay for.

4. Number of panels

Not all doors are created equal! The number of panels in your bifold has a huge impact on the look and operation of the mechanism as well as the price. It is worth taking advice as a 3 leaf bifold at 3500mm wide can be over £1500 cheaper than a 4 leaf door of the same width. Such a large disparity should not be ignored.

5. Colours

Just about every manufacturer charges extra for any colour other than white. Most will increase the price by a percentage depending on your choice. There might be an additional 5% for ‘stock’ colours such as Anthracite grey, or an additional 10% for other non-stock colours. Wood grains can be more, as can ‘dual’ colours where the inside and outside are different.

6. Glass

The type glass, the gas inside the unit and the coatings on the glass all have an impact on the final price. Double glazed units are typically made from toughened glass, coated with a ‘Low E’ soft coat, filled with argon gas and assembled using thermal spacing bars. Depending on the qualities that are important to you, it’s possible to upgrade any of these componants to improve heat retaining, heat reflecting, acoustic or strength properties. These will ultimately define the price you pay.
No two bifolds are the same and by purchasing on price alone you may be missing out on the different qualities of the door that are important to you.
By telling our advisors which features are important to you, they can tailor a quote specific to your needs. Enduring you get a door that suits you perfectly.

The beauty of a bifolding door is when it’s fully open, it creates a seamless transition from the house into the garden. Seamless that is, if you have a flush threshold. A threshold that juts up and has to be stepped over, is not only ugly but also a safety concern.

A flush threshold is definitely possible but how flush is flush, and what are the implications?

If you look at most of the doors, front doors, back doors, French doors and patio doors in your house, you’ll notice you have to step over the threshold. There’s no reason why most of these thresholds can’t be below the finished floor level. This in itself will go a long way to creating that seamless finish but it’s still possible to go a bit further. Both the thresholds described below can also be sunk into the floor but they have been designed with creating a seamless transition in mind.
If you have any questions about bifold doors, or need a quote, please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisors or please complete the form here.

Non rebated thresholds for your bifolding doors

1) To achieve a completely smooth and even transition from inside to out, a non rebated threshold is required, as shown in the image below. The roller sits inside the section and the flooring buts up to the top of the threshold on either side, providing a seamless transition.

The downside to a non rebated threshold is that it doesn’t come with the same level of weather protection a rebated threshold would. Perfect if the bi-fold door is in a sheltered position but not so great if it’s exposed to the full extent of the elements. Rain could run down the door and work its way inside as there is no barrier to stop it.

Rebated thresholds

2) A rebated threshold provides full weather protection. The up stand (the barrier) fits tightly against the door when closed, creating a tight seal. This results in the internal level being slightly different to the external, but not to an extent where it becomes a trip hazard or is unsightly. The image below is Origins rebated threshold, it shows how a relatively flush finish (15mm difference between the two levels) can be achieved.

Being able to open a set of bifolding doors and have a flush transition is high on the list of priorities for almost all our customers. Yet we’ve found that protection from the elements is even higher on that list and thus almost 98% of all customers decide to opt for the rebated threshold.

[SHORT GUIDE] UK Aluminium Bifold Doors vs Aluminium Sliding Doors – Which is best?

For much of the last 10-15 years, aluminium bifold doors have been the popular choice with consumers choosing doors and glazing for their new home extension. In the last 5 years there’s been a resurgence of aluminium sliding patio doors, and for good reason.
But how do aluminium bifold doors and aluminium sliding doors compare in the UK?

Advantages of Aluminium Bifold Doors

  1. Aluminium is a premium quality material – it’s by far the most popular material for bifold doors.
  2. Aesthetically pleasing. Bi-fold doors make your home look modern and slick on the outside and provide a luxurious addition overall. You can choose from a range of styles and over 200 colours to either match the rest of your home or stand out to make a statement.
  3. Flexibility allows you to open your bifolds to any width within the frame and customise where the leaves/panels are split. The doors can be designed to be folded away to the left or right.
  4. Flood your home with natural light. When open, your bifolds allow maximum sunlight into your home turning a normally dark room into a space full of life where you want to spend more time.
  5. Outside/Inside living. With bi-fold doors you don’t need to physically be outside to feel that sense of freedom, as unlike conventional sliding doors they fold right back meaning there is greater space. You experience the comfort of being indoors while being able to enjoy your outdoor space.
  6. Low maintenance. Like most other windows and glass doors, bifold doors require cleaning regularly with detergent to ensure they stay looking spotless. But as they don’t have multiple panes or frames they’re generally easier to clean than most, and other than that you can just sit back and enjoy them.
  7. Security. A greater level of security is offered with bi-fold doors as they feature multi-point locking systems, internally beaded frames and high-security hinges.
  8. Take up little space. When bi-fold doors are open they take up very little space meaning they cause virtually no disturbance to your home’s natural flow. Unlike sliding patio doors which must slide behind another window or door; bi-fold doors collapse to 90 degrees stacking on themselves offering the benefit of opening up your wall completely.
  9. Integral bifold door blinds – glass size is smaller so can have integrated blinds between the glass of the double glazed sealed units.
  10. Up to 1200mm width – Depending on the manufacturer, Origin for example, you can go 1200mm wide per door.
  11. Cheaper – Bifold doors are usually cheaper than sliding doors.
  12. Can provide a better wind rating in some cases in large doors in exposed areas

Disadvantages of Aluminium Bifold Doors

  1. Wider frames – When they are closed you will get lots of frame as each pane of glass has its own frame, this can cause a slightly obstructed view. This can be minimised by choosing a thin frame.
  2. Door stack could be intrusive – Creates a stack to one side when open, this could be intrusive and limit space dependant on location.
  3. Not as energy-efficient – More frame can sometimes negatively affect U-value.

Let’s take a look at how bifolds compare to sliding doors.

Advantages of Aluminium Sliding Doors

  1. An illusion of space. If you’re looking to open up your home, then sliding doors could be the perfect answer.
  2. Uninterrupted views – Choosing sliding doors allows you to have bigger doors, meaning bigger panes of glass to bring ‘more of the outside in’ when the doors are closed.
  3. Take up less space – Sliding doors don’t take up any space inside or outside your home when they’re open – unlike bifold doors which open inward or outward. Bifold doors can temporarily block off small parts of your patio when open, or act as an obstacle for young children.
  4. More glass with thinner frames – Sliding patio doors usually have a thinner frame than bifold doors (depending on the product manufacturer).
  5. Easy to operate. High tech rolling systems mean even the biggest doors glide using one hand.
  6. Manoeuvrable – If you go for a ‘Lift and Slide’ sliding door system you can open the door partially and lock it in place to give you ventilation whilst being in the home.
  7. Energy-efficient – Sliding doors will often achieve a better U-value as there is more glass and less frame.
  8. Low maintenance. Like most other windows and glass doors, sliding doors require cleaning regularly with detergent to ensure they stay looking spotless. But as they don’t have multiple panes or frames they’re generally easier to clean than most, and other than that, you can just sit back and enjoy them. There is very little that can go wrong with a sliding door.

Disadvantages of Aluminium Sliding Doors

  1. Triple track sliding doors allow you to open two-thirds of the door, but there will always be at least one panel that can’t open.
  2. There isn’t the option of having a lead door or traffic door with sliding doors. Some people like to have a door that will swing open if needed.
  3. Track width can be quite large
  4. The largest sliding doors in exposed areas may need a strengthening bar which can add to the sightlines.

1. Choose a Bi-fold Door Specialist

Most double glazing window companies are now offering bi-fold doors alongside their other products, and it would be easy to assume that this would be the natural place to start your search, but as I am sure you are beginning to see, the world of bi-fold doors can be complex.
It is for this reason that specialist bi-fold door companies were started. The knowledge that these bi-fold specialists have, will go a long way to ensuring you end up with a door that fits your requirements.

2. Choose a Local Bi-fold Door Installer

It makes sense to have your doors installed by a local company. It’s always great to support local businesses, but more importantly, should you ever have any reason to get the supplier to come back to look at the doors, you are much more likely to get a rapid response from a local company.
The majority of Bristol Bifold’s customers live within a 50 mile radius of Bristol, but we can also work with customers further afield.

3. Speak to Past Customers

Ask if there are any installations that the company has completed in your area, ask them if you could take a look, or at the very least testimonials from happy customers. If you do speak to some past customers as well as looking at the doors themselves, ask the homeowners how they found their experience in dealing with the company you are considering.
Ask if there were any problems and, if so, how they were overcome as, after all, problems can
occur. Any company that’s worth its salt will work quickly, efficiently and with as little disruption to the customer as possible to get things resolved.

Why Choose Bifold Doors?

Bifold doors are a very popular choice because they let in a lot of extra light into your home. They are also a great way to save some space in tight areas and make small rooms seem larger.
Because of their design, they let in a lot of natural light which will freshen up your room, especially in the winter months. They are an especially good option when it comes to external doors, because of their ability to be secure.
One of the main advantages over sliding doors is that with bifolding doors, you can moreorless open up the whole of your room to the garden in the summer months, whereas with sliding doors, one of the doors has to remain fixed/unopened.

Are Origin Bifold Doors Secure?

Origin bifold doors are secure for many reasons.
They are actually just as secure as regular patio doors or French doors and more secure in some instances.
Most bifold door systems have a multi-point locking system which can even make them more secure than regular doors. They are also installed on an in-line tracking system that a potential intruder will not be able to lift off the tracks.
The doors are attached to the track with a gear, so an intruder would have to make a lot of noise and spend a lot of time removing the gear before they would be able to access your home. Because burglars understand this concept, they know bifold doors are not an easy target. It usually takes longer to access a home from a bifold door entrance than a different kind of door.
While bifold doors have a multi-point locking system, they typically only have three or five points. Origin bifold doors are even more secure because they employ an eight-point locking system that is unique to their brand.
Glazing is also something that comes standard for bifold doors. There are many different options when it comes to glazing, but using double-glazing is the standard option. This serves several purposes. It is a great way to help with the energy efficiency of your home. Double-glazing also adds a level of sturdiness to your door which adds greater protection to your home.
If you have any questions or need a quote, please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisors or please complete the form here.
How Do I Choose the Right Bifold Door?
Even if you know that you want to install bifold doors in your home, you may still be unsure about how to narrow down your choices. You will obviously have to make decisions about color and design that fit in with your house’s aesthetic, but the choices you will have to make will go far beyond that as well.
One of the most important things you will need to decide when it comes to security for your bifold doors is the kind of locks it will have on it. Lock systems help to keep possible intruders out of your home, but it also needs to be easy to operate for you and your family.
Origin bifold doors use heavy-duty zinc hinges so they are secure and resistant to attacks, even from experienced intruders. Using a cylinder lock has been shown to prevent common attacks like picking, drilling, bumping, and snapping. Knowing your doors are secure against all kinds of attacks will help you feel safe in your home.
Deadbolts are usually installed as a standard feature for a bifold door system. They can be controlled either with a twisting lock on the door or with a key. These will usually be a perfectly secure option to use with your bifold doors to make them secure. If you have small children, then you may also want to look into child-proof locks. There are many varieties that give you options to fit the needs of your family.

What is Glazing?

As mentioned briefly above, glazing is another way you can add a little extra security to your bifold door system. Glazing makes glass tougher which will protect against accidents and help you reduce your energy bills as well. It also adds another level of security to your doors. Adding more levels of security to your home can also help you get a better UK home insurance policy for your home.

Can I Add More Security?

If you still want to add more layers of security to your bifold doors, there are some options. You can use security screens which are mesh screens installed behind or in front of the doors. This means you can keep the doors open when it is warm outside without losing security. The screen can also help keep the flies out!
It is also possible to add a security system to a set of bifold doors that will alert you if the doors are tampered with in some way. Laminated glass will add a layer of vinyl between the sheets of glass that protect against glass cutters. It is impact-resistant, so it is harder to break and is less dangerous when broken.

Top 5 Do’s & Don’ts When Choosing a Bifold Door

We’re here to make your bifold door search more straightforward, which is why we’ve created this list of “Do’s and Don’ts” to save you time. And also, feel free to take a look at our most popular aluminium bifolding doors from Origin.

Do’s

  1. View the actual door you intend to buy. Bi-folding doors and sliding doors can vary hugely in cost and quality, and when spending a considerable sum of money on a set of doors, the last thing you want is to be disappointed when they arrive.
  2. Ask about weather guarantees. The current buzz word is low threshold, but we don’t know of a single folding sliding door on the market that offers a weather guarantee on low thresholds. On an external door we would recommend having a rebated threshold and then sinking it a further 1cm into the floor. This would only give you a step height of just 1 – 1.5cm (the thickness of your finger). The last thing you want is wind whistling in under your new set of doors come winter time.
  3. Get an insurance backed guarantee. Make sure that whoever you are buying your folding patio doors from will issue you with an insurance backed guarantee. An insurance backed guarantee gives you the peace of mind that should the company go up in smoke, your guarantee won’t go with it. Insurance backed guarantees are usually for 10 years and shouldn’t cost you any extra.
  4. Buy bifold doors that pass the current building regs. Building regulations are constantly updated, so ask if the bifold or sliding doors you wish to buy pass the current regs. Also ask for documentation and certificates. Keep these safe, so when you come to sell your house, you can pass them onto the new owner.
  5. Ask for references from your installer. Any reputable company should be more than willing to put you in touch with past customers. At Bristol Bi-fold we are proud of the bi-folding doors we have installed, and love showing them off and so do the new owners of the doors.

If you have any questions about how to get the perfect bifolding or sliding doors for your home or need a quote, please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisors or please complete the form here.

Dont’s

  1. Avoid bifold doors with an external track. There are some bifold doors on the market that have an external track that the doors slide along. These doors are not purpose built bi-folding doors, they have been adapted to make them work as bi-folds. There is a security risk here as the track can be levered off. A purpose built bi-fold door should have all the tracks built into the frame.
  2. Don’t buy a door purely on price. The old saying “you get what you pay for” could not be truer than when buying bi-fold doors.
  3. Top Hung vs Bottom Rolling? Some suppliers will tell you that top hung is better than bottom rolling, or bottom rolling is better than top hung. Don’t believe them. We sell both, so can honestly say, one is no better than the other. Some companies just use this as a selling technique.
  4. Avoid ‘floating mullions’. We don’t recommend bi-fold doors with “floating mullions” this is an extra piece of material that goes between each door leaf. Why would you need that extra piece? In our experience it not only looks ugly, but can and does drop, causing operation problems.
  5. Don’t pay the balance of the job until the door is installed. There are some companies that want the balance paid a few days before the installation has taken place. If you have paid in full and you are not completely satisfied with your doors when they are fitted, you have less chance of getting a quick and satisfactory solution. Pay the balance once you are happy you have received what you have paid for.

You’ve decided you want bifold doors! More light in the house and the opportunity to bring the outside in! It’s a great decision. Now you’re faced with the big and potentially costly decision of what type of bifold to use. It’s a minefield, and one that our customers are faced with every day.

With years of experience under our belts we know that there is no right or wrong choice. Everyone has different list of priorities and every bifold has pros and cons.

Here, we’ve pulled together THE DEFINITIVE list of pos and cons for UPVC, Timber and Aluminium. Which material is right for your project?

UPVC

Pros

• Great price. The cheapest on the market
• Will probably match the rest of the UPVC windows and doors in your house.
• Easy to supply and fit and plenty of healthy competition on price.
• Very little maintenance.
• Good thermal properties.

Cons

• Can be tricky to open. The biggest downside to UPVC is that it expands and contracts. This isn’t an issue when its used for single windows or a standard door, but when you put 3,4,5 or 6 doors next to each other to make a bifold, the expansion and contraction can make the operation of the bifold door less than perfect. In the heat of summer when you want to use your door most, the UPVC can expand, making opening and closing the door more difficult.
• Less view. UPVC isn’t as strong as other materials, so the frames have to be much wider. This reduces the amount of glass you can have in your doors meaning you wont enjoy as much light or as much view outside.
• Higher threshold. One of the features people love about bifold doors is the seamless transition from inside to outside. UPVC has the biggest threshold of all the materials meaning you’ll have to step over the door frame to get out.

Timber

Pros

• Environmentally friendly. All timber bifolds are now made using sustainable timber
• The natural properties of timber add a warm, elegant and traditional look to any home.
• Of all the materials used to make bifold doors, timber is the one that can be repaired the easiest.
• Slimmer sightlines than UPVC.

Cons

• Timber bifolds are by far the most expensive material.
• Maintenance is high. Timber doors must be recoated, sealed and painted to maintain the factory finish every 3-5 years. This means there is an ongoing cost implication of keeping your bifolds in good repair.
• Because wood is a natural material there is a tendency for it to twist and split, even with engineered timber. They need regular maintenance to ensure they stay in good condition.
• Weather related warping through lack of care will probably not be covered by a warrantee.

Aluminium

Pros

• No maintenance required. With up to a 20 year guarantee, you can relax knowing that your doors will still look good in 20 years time.
• The inherent strength of aluminium allows the profile of the window to be thinner than any other material, allowing more light to flood your room.
• With over 350 colours to choose from, as well as textured wood grain options you can style your door any way you wish.
• Amazing thermal properties, providing an integrated thermal break and keeping your house warm and cosy.
• Low threshold, giving you the seamless indoor/ outdoor look that we all strive for.

Cons

• The cost of precision engineered aluminium can be high.
• You may need to shop around for an aluminium profile that will match and compliment your existing windows and doors.
• Aluminium can have more minimalist modern look, which isn’t everyone’s taste.

So there we are! Each material has its pros and cons, you just need to decide which of the pro’s are more important to you and which of the cons you can live with. If you’re sill undecided and need more information we are always happy to discuss your needs with you.

We live in an age where there’s an insurance policy for everything. We hope we never need to make a claim, but knowing it’s in place gives peace of mind.

Almost all businesses within the construction and home improvement industry will offer guarantees. Some cover the product and some cover the workmanship. But what good are these guarantees and warranties if the company were to go out of business?

Imagine if the bifold door you had installed broke, and you discovered that the company that had sold you the door had gone into liquidation. Without an insurance backed guarantee to protect you, you’d have to pay for someone to fix it. But had the company given you an insurance backed guarantee, the warranties given to you at the time of purchase would still be valid. The insurance company would take care of the repairs for you.

To be able to offer an insurance backed guarantee, installers must be part of a competent person scheme (CPS). Introduced by the UK Government, the CPA allows individuals and enterprises to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations as an alternative to submitting a building notice or using an approved inspector.

A Competent Person must register with a scheme that has been approved by The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

As of 2014 it became mandatory that any member of a CPS has to offer insurance backed guarantees.

You want to be sure that the guarantees you’re offered are worth more than the paper they’re written on. Ask to see documentation showing which CPS they belong to and which insurer they use to cover their guarantees.

What are Bifold Door Integral Blinds?

Blinds for bifold doors are double glazed units with venetian blinds placed between the glass. They are controlled by either string or a crank handle.

Our blinds are sealed blind units and are ideal for Bifold Doors, but we can also supply and glaze them into existing doors and windows.

Why Do You Need Blinds for Your Bifold Doors?

  1. Maintenance Free – Sealed units mean blinds are maintenance free and protected from damage.
  2. Improve your Home’s Insulation – The blind’s U-values minimise unwanted heat loss.
  3. Blinds remain strong despite the Sun – State-of-the-art materials mean no UV degradation.
  4. Compliment your Interior – With our range of colours it means there’s something to complement every interior.

No Maintenance

Because our blinds are in sealed units, they’re permanently dust-free and protected against accidental damage.

The blinds are opened, closed and tilted using innovative but simple rotational magnets. These keep each unit’s hermetic seal while being easy-to-use and virtually impossible to break.

RAL is the leading colour matching system for the industry. It allows you to select an exact colour from the RAL colour range for us to reproduce on your bi-fold door frame.
The RAL colour system that we work with, will give you a choice of 100s of colours, as well metallics and also wood grain on some aluminium bi-fold doors such as the Origin.

Where can I see the RAL colours?

Colour matching is an exact process, which is why we all use the detailed RAL colour system. If you were to look at RAL colours on your computer’s monitor, what you see is only an approximate representation of the colour you’d see in a real life situation.

For viewing RAL colours more precisely, you will need to see the colour in print. This is why we have RAL colour swatch books in our showroom for you to flick through. Our customers generally make their colour choices after they’ve visited our showroom.

Related: Book an appointment to visit our Bristol showroom.

Download the RAL iPhone App

You can even purchase the official RAL iColour app which will allow you take a photo in your home with your iPhone and recolour the objects in your photo. Again, take caution when viewing RAL colours on screens because you will be seeing an approximate colour representation.

What are Bifold Door Sightlines?

When you look at a set of bifolding doors, the distance between a pain of glass on one door and the pain of glass on another door is called the sightline – basically it’s the full width of the two frames of a door where they meet.
what is a bifold door sightline
An important benefit of modern doors is that they have slim sightlines to allow more light into the home and less frame gets in the way of your view of the garden. This creates a more stylish look and feel.
However, style and slim sightlines are nothing without the strength and security that materials like aluminium brings. The frames of our most popular bifold door, the Origin Aluminium are extremely strong and yet weigh 67% less than steel.

Trickle vents are set into the frame at the top of the bifold door panels, and allow air to flow through. They can be opened and closed, as required.
The law now requires all new windows and doors to have them. The only exception is if you are replacing existing doors that do not have trickle vents. One trickle vent per door set is usually enough. Your architect will be able to clarify this for you.

A couple of terms you will come across are“top hung” and“bottom rolling”. They refer to how the weight of the doors will be distributed when the doors are folding/sliding.
All bi-fold doors have tracks in the top and bottom of the frame that the doors slide along in a train fashion. With top hung doors, the doors are “hanging” from the top track, (so all the weight is at the top) and with bottom rolling doors they roll along the bottom track (so all the weight is at the bottom). Both systems will have a guide that runs along the other track.

Be aware that some companies will tell you that one is better than the other. These companies are likely to only sell one of the systems, and therefore say that the one they sell is the better one. In reality, one is no better than the other.

One thing that is worth noting is that with top hung doors, you will have to ensure that the lintel above where the doors are to be fitted is strong enough to take both the weight of the doors and the weight of whatever is above the doors (wall, roof etc). With bottom rolling doors all the weight is at the bottom, so this doesn’t apply.

What is a head?

The head is the horizontal part of the frame above the door. The head on a bifold or sliding door houses the top running gear. As with the jambs it needs to be fixed well as a lot of weight is transferred through the head while the door is being open and closed.

What is a jamb?

I’m sure you’ve heard the name before but do you know where the door jamb can be found?

The door jambs, sometimes known as the door posts are the vertical components of the frame. One side takes the hinges while the other side takes the strike plate and a hollowed out slot that the lock fits into when the door is shut.

It’s important that the jambs have a solid wall to fix to. Unlike French doors which only have one door hanging from the jamb, bifolds can have many more, sometimes as many as eight. Part of the weight is taken up by the top and bottom tracks but poor fixings in the jamb can lead to the frame twisting and flexing.

What is a Sliding Mullion on a Bifold Door?

A sliding mullion is only used on an even number of doors which all fold/slide in the same direction, e.g. a 2 door set or 4 door set. A sliding mullion is not required when the even number of doors are split, e.g. a 4 door set where 1x door goes to the left and 3x doors go to the right.
A sliding mullion is not beneficial but a necessity. It’s best avoided if possible as it will increase the sight lines, essentially it is required to prevent the door trolleys/guides from fouling on the jambs (side frames) when the doors are closed.
I f you have any questions or need a quote, please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisors or please complete the form here.

You will probably come across two types of hinge: flag hinges and butt hinges.
Flag hinges are bigger, and are fixed to the face of the door.
Butt hinges are a lot smaller and discrete, with the fixings being on the side of the door. The way the hinges are fixed to the door is also important.

With a bi-fold of higher quality, the screws that hold the hinge in place won’t screw directly into the frame material, they should screw into either a steel clamp or steel rivnut. The only exception to this are timber bifold doors, where you should be looking for either stainless steel or brass screws.

Juggling tradesmen and cash flow can make managing a build a tricky business. You don’t want to order materials too soon but at the same time, you don’t want your builders standing around waiting for products to arrive.

Bi-folding and sliding doors are bespoke items so there’s going to be a manufacturing lead time. Lead times can vary from 5 days to 12 weeks so it’s important to decide on the glazing products early on in your planning.

Once you’ve decided on the product, you need to decide who will be installing them. Will it be your builder or the glazing company? If it’s your builder then he will be able to tell you when he wants delivery. Using the manufacturers lead time you will know when to place the order.

If it’s the glazing company you need to find out what their installation lead times are. The door may be manufactured in 5 days but their installation lead time might be much longer.

If your supplier is carrying out the install they will want to visit the site to take some measurements. Inform your supplier as soon as the builders have created the opening. it’s at this point you will place your order. Lead times generally start only after the survey has taken place.

Checklist.

  1. Decide on the product and supplier early on.

  2. Ask what the manufacturing and install lead times are

  3. Decide on who is installing your doors

  4. If it’s the builder ask when he needs them and work back from there

  5. If it’s the glazing company, let your builders know the lead time will start from when the opening is ready so he can prioritise it.

  6. Keep all communication channels open, and regularly check in with your builder and glazing company.

You have two options.

Installed by Bristol Bifold

If you would prefer to use specialist fitters, then we can install your new doors for you. We retrain our fitters on a regular basis to ensure they are working to correct procedures. Bi-fold doors are unlike any other door and can benefit from specialist knowledge.

Our fitters are installing these doors day in day out, which means they know how to get it right first time. This reduces the chance of damaging the doors and also means everything will be set up correctly and the doors will work as they are meant to.
See our fitters in action, in the video below. This was filmed at a customer’s property (with their permission!) and is a typical 3 leaf Origin installation.

Self Install

You or your builder could install them or you could get Bristol Bifold to fit them for you. If you would like to fit the bifold doors yourself then we can provide you with full fitting instructions. There are also step by step video guides available for some bifold doors – we will give you the links to these).

If you come across any problems that you can’t find the answers to, then we have fully trained engineers in the office who are more than happy to give you the answers you need.

If Bristol Bifold are installing your doors, then the survey will be carried out for you by us.
If you require supply-only doors you can either book a time for one of our surveyors to come out and do the survey, or you can survey the door opening yourself.
You can find instructions on how to do this below.
| | 1. Measure the diagonals from corner to corner. This will tell you whether or not your hole is square. If the two measurements are equal the hole is square. |
| — | — |
| 2. Measure the width of the hole in three places. Take the smallest measurement and deduct 10mm, this will give you the measurement of your doors. | |
| | 3. Measure the height in three places, take the smallest measurement again and deduct 10mm. Now you have the height of your new doors. |
NOTE: Don’t forget, if you are going to make the threshold flush with your inside floor level, then you need to sink part of the frame below the finished floor level. This amount differs depending on which door you are having and which type of threshold you have chosen.

The PDF drawings for each door threshold can be found on the bifold door product pages. Alternatively call one of our friendly advisers who will guide you through this and any other questions you may have regarding surveys.

How Much Do Bifold Doors Cost?

What affects the cost of a Bifold Door?

There are a number of factors that affect price. The first and by far the most important is quality. This can be compared to buying a car.
* You could go out and buy a cheap run-around that will get you from A to B.
* You could also go out and buy an Audi (other car manufacturers are available) that will also get you from A to B, but which will last longer, look better and operate more smoothly.

More Expensive Might Not Mean Better

Always try and see the doors you intend to buy, in person. Just because they are more expensive than another set, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily better quality. Narrow down the doors you’re interested in and visit a showroom. You’re always welcome to come to our showroom in Bristol if you like.

How does the size & number of panels affect the bifold door price?

The second thing to affect the price is size. Thirdly is the number of panels or leaves. The more panels you have the more it will cost. This is because there is more material involved, more running gear, more hinges and handles etc. Really you’d want to achieve fewer panels as that should mean a great expanse of glass, and less space taken up by the door frames.
The Origin aluminium bifold door can have panels up to 1200mm wide allowing for less panels in a given width. For example if you had an opening of 3200mm, most manufacturers (with a maximum panel width of 1000mm) would say you have to have 4 panels, but with the Origin you could still have 3 panels. This not only costs less, but also means less aluminium, therefore giving you more light flooding the room.
Sightlines – when you look at a set of bifolding doors, the distance between a pain of glass on one door and the pain of glass on another door is called the sightline. The doors with slimmer sightlines can be more expensive because of the technology required to achieve them. But it could be worth it if it allows more light into the home and less frame gets in the way of your view of your garden.

What Else Determines Pricing?

Other factors that can affect price are colour, handles, trickle vents and whether it is supply only or supply and installation.
We’d be happy to provide you with the price of a bifold door, including installation. Please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisers or please email us here.

Aluminium Bifold Doors: Perfect To Open Up Your Space

Over the past 15 years, bi-fold doors have always been the go-to choice for homeowners looking to expand their living space. This is because bi-fold doors were the only ones able to accommodate the needs of larger apertures (hole in your wall).
But, today, bi-fold doors are no longer a synonym for chunky glass panels and heavy-looking PVC sightlines. Instead, they have become a unique and stylish design element that merges functionality, aesthetics, and convenience.

What Are Aluminium Bifold Doors?

Sometimes called folding patio doors or folding sliding doors, bi-fold doors are doors that open by folding in or out of your property. They come in various materials and sizes, but aluminium sightlines and triple glazed glass panels make for the best type of bi-fold doors. Being able to open up to 90% of the aperture (hole in your wall), aluminium bifold doors are the best choice to add value to small and large spaces.

Benefits of Aluminum Bifold Doors

Aluminium bifold doors have unique benefits to keep in mind. Here is a rundown:
* They can truly enhance your room’s potential – since they can open up to 90% of the aperture, no space will go to waste. They are also suitable for smaller doors or openings.
* They add a unique light signature to your home – the entire atmosphere of your home can change by changing its lighting. Bifold doors can help you benefit from more natural light.
* They allow you to bring the outdoors in – since they can open entirely, bifold doors can seamlessly merge the indoors and outdoors and create a wider open space. In summer, this is perfect to enjoy uninterrupted BBQs and parties, cook while socialising with your guests sitting outdoors, and create the ultimate playground for your little ones!
* They help you regulate your home’s indoor temperature – bifold doors are extremely versatile. You can open it entirely to merge the indoor and outdoor area and let in the cooling breeze in the summer. Or, you can just open one of the panels to freshen up the indoor air without letting your whole home go too cold.
* They are easy to install and maintain – you can install bi-fold doors as bottom rolling or top hung configurations. Once in, all you will need to do is ensure that leaves and dirt don’t accumulate in the rolling mechanism.
* They are highly versatile – you can decide to open just one of the panels or designate a master door, so you won’t need to open the entire folding door to let in just a little fresh air!

Drawbacks of Aluminum Bifold Doors

Aluminium bi-fold doors are so popular for many reasons. However, it is important also to be aware of their drawbacks.
* They require several frames or sightlines – compared to sliding doors, bi-fold doors require frames for each glass panel. When they are folded, this can cause a not-so-appealing design on one side of the aperture. You can minimise this effect by picking slender or thinner frames for your glass panels.
* They lack a threshold – bifold doors can close the gap between your home’s interior and exterior areas. However, with a flush threshold, there is less protection against water or moisture. You can prevent issues by installing a drainage system or a step.
* You need space to stack them – when the bi-fold door is open, you will need some room to house the stacked panels. These can rest inside or outside your home, depending on convenience. However, this isn’t really a drawback considering the opening the bifold doors achieve.

Who Are Aluminium Bifold Doors For?

When selecting the best aluminium doors for your home extension, your personal preferences will play an important role. However, space’s characteristics might also offer you important hints.
Bi-fold doors are particularly suitable for smaller apertures because they can open up almost entirely. At the same time, they might be a more convenient option if you need to cover larger openings. This is because you can opt for several smaller glass panels instead of a single large one – which can be expensive!

Aluminium Bifold Doors: FAQs

Here is a collection of our customers’ main questions across South-West England and South-East Wales answered by our Bristol Bifold designers.

Are Aluminium Bifold Doors Cold?

The thermal performance of aluminium bi-fold doors is generally similar to sliding doors when you opt for a high-quality model.
To make sure that your home’s temperature won’t be affected, as for the U-value of your windows, as well as thermal and weather testing reports. High-quality, double-glazing or triple-glazing bifold doors should guarantee you a U-value rating of 1.2-1.4 – or even lower!

Are Aluminium Bifold Doors Better Than uPVC?

Aluminium sightlines and frames offer many benefits in comparison with uPVC.
* They are strong but lightweight
* They better suit the style of modern and contemporary homes
* They offer more slender or thinner sightlines, which create clearer views
* They are easy to install and maintain
* They last longer than uPVC

How Much Do Aluminium Bifold Doors Cost?

The cost of Aluminum bifold doors can vary depending on several factors, including the type of glass panel, installation costs, delivery, and VAT. However, generally, you will be looking to spend around £1,200 per linear meter.

Are Bifold Doors Worth the Money?

Bi-fold doors are a great investment. Since they are long-lasting and require minimal investment, they are worth the money!

Should Bi-Fold Doors Open In or Out?

Whether a bi-fold door should open in or out mainly depends on your home’s design, and there are pros and cons of each. A bi-fold door that opens towards your home’s interior will require some space to stack, which means that you will need to leave a corner free of furniture.
Your designer at Bristol Bifold will be able to recommend the best solution for your home.

Aluminium Sliding Doors: Ideal for a Cleaner Design

Aluminium sliding doors have become increasingly popular for designs that are clearer, more streamlined, or minimalist. Just like bi-fold doors, sliding doors can help you open up a room, expand your living space, and improve your home’s lighting.
However, these doors are unique in the way that they provide undisturbed and clear views, thanks to their minimal sightlines and large expanses of glass.

What Are Aluminium Sliding Doors?

Aluminium sliding doors boast extensive glass panels, completely uninterrupted by frames or sightlines. Sliding doors usually mount much larger glass panels, up to 6 square meters, and much thinner frames. When opening your sliding doors, the two glass panels will overlap each other, minimising how much metal you will see when they are open.
If you invested in a home with a panoramic view over a garden, lake, mountains, or the sea, these doors are the optimal choice to enjoy these breathtaking views. There is no better design element that would allow you to enjoy your morning coffee or an evening drink with uninterrupted views of the outdoors.

Benefits of Aluminum Sliding Doors

Aluminium sliding doors are an excellent alternative to bi-fold doors. They allow you to reduce the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors spaces of your home. And, they are great to regulate your home’s temperature, air quality, and amount of sunlight.
Your designer at Bristol Bifold will guide you through the many other unique characteristics of these panels. However, here is a rundown for your convenience:
* Offer uninterrupted panoramic views – One of the greatest benefits of aluminium sliding doors is their minimal sightlines. They allow you to look out onto your garden or patio without the inconvenience of metal frames in the way. If you have dedicated time and effort towards creating a dreamy garden, patio, or lawn, these doors are perfect to enjoy gratifying views.
* Easy to open and close – the modern operating system will make for smooth opening and closing operations.
* They can flood your home with natural light – there is nothing quite like a frameless glass door to enjoy the magic of natural light indoors. With sliding doors, you can add a distinctive light signature to your home and enhance its interior design.
* They minimise boundaries between your home’s inside and outside areas – substituting a wall or cumbersome window with an aluminium sliding door can work wonders to create a seamless space. So, you can let your little ones run free, create an open cooking area, or merge your indoor living room and your garden – the perfect summer paradise!
* They are long-lasting – aluminium sliding doors are extremely resistant to the elements and represent a long-lasting investment. While uPVC windows have a life expectancy of 25-35 years, aluminium frames can last up to 50 years.
* They can make your home more energy-efficient – aluminium sliding panels can also insulate your home while allowing more natural light in. This is great to cut down on bills and create a healthier atmosphere inside your home.

Drawbacks of Aluminum Sliding Doors

The benefits of an aluminium sliding door largely outweigh the disadvantages. However, it is worth being aware of them when making this such an investment.
* One of the panels won’t open – whether you have opted for double or triple track sliding doors, there will always be one fixed panel that won’t open. This means that you can’t entirely open up a room.
* The track can take up space – depending on your doors’ design and build; the track can be quite wide.
* You might need extra support – if you are installing a particularly large sliding door, the panel might require an extra support frame which can impact the door’s aesthetics.

Aluminium sliding doors are the best design elements if you wish to truly open up a room and enjoy uninterrupted views over your patio, garden, or landscape. Since the presence of metal is reduced to a minimum, the amount of natural light flooding your room is unrivalled.
However, you should keep in mind that, because of that fixed panel, the aluminium sliding door will only leave around 65% of the aperture free. Additionally, finding and installing a single large glass panel can be expensive.

Aluminium Sliding Doors: FAQs

And, you can ask them all the questions that come to mind. These are the most common ones to put some of your doubts to rest.

Are Sliding Doors Expensive?

The cost of aluminium sliding doors varies depending on how big the opening is and how wide your desired sightlines will be. However, what makes sliding doors more expensive is the size of the glass panel. Large single-piece glass panels can be expensive.

How Much Do Aluminium Sliding Doors Cost?

Aluminium sliding doors are not generally much more expensive than bifold doors. However, the larger the glass panels are, the more they might cost.

Are Aluminium Sliding Doors Worth the Money?

Aluminium Bifold Doors vs Sliding Doors: The Ultimate Showdown

Now that you know everything about aluminium bifold doors and sliding doors, it is time to decide on the best option for your needs. Unfortunately, when designing your dream home extension, there is no “one-size-fits-all” formula that you can follow. Nonetheless, our designers at Bifold Bristol can help you make the best choice for your needs. The sections below might make things easier!

Which Is Better Bi-Fold or Sliding Doors?

It is impossible to determine whether bi-fold or sliding doors are universally better. The first option might be more affordable and suitable or smaller apertures, while the second one offers unparalleled views and a modern design.
If it is the views that you are after, sliding doors are an excellent choice thanks to their minimal sightlines and wide glass expanses.
At the same time, bi-fold doors can open up to almost 90% of the aperture and offer unbroken views when the glass panels are open.
Your home’s structure, lifestyle and budget can help you choose between the two options.

Which Is Cheaper Bi-Fold or Sliding Doors?

The price per linear meter of the two aluminium doors is roughly the same. The factors that will influence their price include the type of glass you have selected and the sightlines’ width. One aspect that makes sliding doors more expensive is that they usually mount larger glass units, which can be very costly.

Are Aluminium Doors Better Than uPVC?

Aluminium doors are of much higher quality compared to uPVC. It can withstand any weather condition without warping, provide better insulation, and last longer. Aluminium frames are also stronger, which means that you can opt for a thinner structure that minimises the visible amount of metal.

Are Aluminium Doors More Expensive Than uPVC?

Aluminium doors are generally more expensive than uPVC. However, since they last between 20 and 30 years longer than uPVC doors, they are a much better investment for your home.

Will Bifold Doors or Sliding Doors Add Value To Your House?

Independently on whether you have opted for aluminium bi-fold or sliding doors, you can rest assured that they will add value to your home.
Homeowners and homebuyers are increasingly more concerned with creating healthy, airy, open, and luminous living spaces – all of which can be achieved with sliding or bi-fold doors. So, you can increase your property’s value and make it a much more desirable option for potential buyers.

Top Pros & Cons of UK Aluminium Sliding Doors

For much of the last 10-15 years, bifold doors have been the popular choice with consumers. In the last 5-7 years there’s been a resurgence of sliding patio doors, and for good reason.
Homeowners want light to flood their homes and make their home feel bigger – the modern aluminium sliding door provides that.
Sliding doors used to be very small, often no bigger than 2 metres wide. Generally, they were made from chunky, white UPVC – you could hardly call them inspirational.
Now, that’s all changed.
Aluminium sliding door panels can be much larger than the biggest bifold panel, up to 6 sq metres, that’s a lot of glass.
If it’s light and uninterrupted views you want, then sliding doors are worth considering.
The frames (sightlines) on sliding doors are now much thinner, usually half the thickness of a bifold door. Bifold door panels butt up to the next panel. Sliding door panels overlap each other, reducing the amount of visible aluminium.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of a sliding patio door. Also, i f you have any questions or need a quote, please call 0117 992 3101 to speak to one of our friendly advisors or please complete the form here.

Advantages of Sliding Doors

Disadvantages of Sliding Doors

  1. Triple track sliding doors allow you to open two-thirds of the door, but there will always be at least one panel that can’t open. This means you can’t open up the entire way like you can with bifolding doors.
  2. There isn’t the option of having a lead door or traffic door with sliding doors. Some people like to have a door that will swing open if needed, which you can only do with bifolds, giving you quicker access to the outside.
  3. Track width can be quite large
  4. The largest sliding doors in exposed areas may need a strengthening bar which can add to the sightlines.

Sunflex 35 Slide & Stack System

To clean aluminium bifold doors, all that is required is a wipe down with a damp cloth and maybe a little detergent. Hinges, locks and handles will benefit from a spray of oil twice a year, as would any door.
The tracks will collect dust and debris and it won’t affect the operation as long as any substance isn’t too big. We do advise giving the tracks a sweep out every now and again.

With the timber bifold doors, it is the same as above, the only difference being that timber needs to be treated every 3-5 years depending on which way your doors are facing.

There’s no doubt that the sleek, modern appearance of bi-folding and sliding doors enhance any home. All the doors we supply are designed, manufactured and tested to ensure they stand up to the harshest weather the UK has to offer. There are a few tips and tricks we recommend our customers follow so their doors look and operate perfectly for years to come.

How often should I clean my doors?

Bi-fold Doors are very low maintenance, but they do need occasional cleaning and light maintenance. For most people once every 6-12 months is fine. However, If you live in a marine environment, this will need to be done more frequently. In salt water environments, the external surface of the doors should be washed down with fresh water on a monthly basis. This prevents salt deposits from building up. The same goes for high pollution areas such as city centers or industrial areas.

Cleaning and maintenance.

  1. Use a light, soapy solution and non-abrasive cloth to wipe dirt from the doors. Avoid using an abrasive cloth such as a scouring pad as the doors can be scratched. Do not use solvent based cleaning products or crème cleaners. For stubborn stains you can try using a rubber ink eraser. You will notice instantly if it has worked so don’t rub too hard or for too long.

  2. “QLon” seals: These are the seals around the edges of the doors. Clean them in the same way as you do the frames. It’s recommended that silicone spray is applied to the seals annually.

  3. Tracks: Keep an eye of for stones and other debris that may have fallen into the track. Remove them as and when you see them as they could impair the operation of your doors. To clean the tracks use a small brush to loosen any debris. Using a suitable vacuum cleaner with a thin attachment, vacuum up the debris in the track.

  4. Hinges, handles, locks and the trolley wheels in the top and bottom track: Wipe away any dust, dirt and old grease to ensure they are clean. You can then spray them with a silicone spray. Wipe away any excess.

Show your doors some love.

Your doors should operate smoothly without having to apply any force. If something feels stiff, then more than likely a bit of debris in the track or hinges. Forcing the doors rather than clearing any obstructions could damage your doors and void any warranty.

If there is no obvious obstruction your doors may need some adjustment. Call our office and we’ll send one of our teams to put things right for you.
